Award-winning author Judy L. Murray delivers another captivating addition to her "Chesapeake Bay Series" with the fourth installment, Villain in the Vineyard. While it’s not your typical cozy mystery, the book still delivers plenty of intrigue, including a murder or two. At the heart of the story is Helen Morrisey, a respected realtor in the charming and ever-growing Chesapeake Bay community. Murray paints Helen as a richly nuanced character-a single mother, skilled real estate agent, and amateur sleuth with a depth of psychological complexity. She's the kind of endearing protagonist readers can't help but want as a friend.

Helen’s positive attitude helps her brush off the unsettling sight of graffitied slogans on her clients' homes, rationalizing that it's likely the work of bored teenagers with nothing better to do. However, as the incidents escalate, her optimism begins to waver. The vandalism includes the painted slogan, "Your agent is a crook," a direct attack on her reputation that not only threatens her integrity but starts to negatively impact her business.

Adding to the tension, Helen has a budding romantic interest in a local detective who, while supportive in the past during her amateur sleuthing adventures, is reluctant to get involved with what he sees as petty vandalism. Frustrated but determined, Helen realizes she has no choice but to take matters into her own hands. She sets out to investigate the circumstances of the defacement and delve into the lives of the clients who've been affected, piecing together clues that might shed light on the motive behind the graffiti. With her business on the line and her integrity under attack, Helen is mentally and emotionally challenged to uncover the truth, all while navigating the delicate balance of her personal and professional relationships.

A respected town leader and close friend is found dead-but was it an accident or murder? Just days later, a client with a renowned vineyard is discovered with his throat brutally slashed. Helen suspects these two deaths are no coincidence. Yet, the police want nothing to do with her theories or involvement. As the attacks hit closer to home, Helen begins to wonder: are these murders and the threats against her connected? Should she embrace her alter ego as a private investigator to uncover the truth—and outsmart a dangerous mastermind targeting her?

The author skillfully brings to life the quirky secondary characters, carefully crafting their personalities and exploring their unique interactions with Helen on a personal level. Along Helen's complex journey to unravel the mysterious deaths, several red herrings are cleverly woven into the narrative, adding layers of intrigue.

Fans of the series will be captivated by the author's unique talent for weaving the world of real estate into her suspenseful mystery stories. This volume stands strong as a standalone read, while also enticing readers to explore Murray's other works, including Murder in the Master, Killer in the Kitchen, and Peril in the Pool House.

About Judy L Murray

Judy L Murray is the 2022 First Place Winner of the PenCraft Award for Sleuth Fiction. The debut novel in her Chesapeake Bay Mystery Series, Murder in the Master, is an IPPY Silver Medalist, a Silver Falchion Award Winner, and an Agatha Award Nominee for Best First Novel. Second in the series, Killer in the Kitchen, released in September 2023, won the IPPY Gold Medal for Mystery e-fiction. Third in the series, Peril in the Pool House, will be released in September 2023 through her print and e-format publisher Level Best Books. Her series introduces Helen Morrisey, a quick-tongued, gutsy and mature woman long on loyalty and short on romance. A mystery story addict, Helen's approach to solving problems is to call on the talents of her favorite, strong-minded female detectives within her own mental Detection Club, much like Agatha Christie formed in the 1930's.

A former vice president and real estate broker for Berkshire Hathaway's seventy-two office Philadelphia region, Judy worked with enough delusional sellers, jittery buyers, testy contractors, and diva agents to fill her head with back-office insight and truth versus gossip. She and her husband live atop a cliff on the Chesapeake Bay where they are buffeted by winds in winter and invaded by family and dogs in summer. Combined with her obsession for mysteries with smart, gutsy women, from young Nancy Drew to the wise Miss Marple, and her Chesapeake Bay Mystery Series was launched.

Judy holds a newspaper journalism degree from the S.I. Newhouse School at Syracuse University and an MBA concentrating in marketing with Penn State University. She began her writing career as a newspaper reporter and magazine columnist. She is a member of Sisters in Crime as their Guppy Board Liaison and Mystery Writers of America.
